I had not been taking the best care of myself for quite some time, always focusing on either work or family instead.


What was the moment that you decided, "I’m going to do Pilates”?

Last year I became an empty nester. I had not been taking the best care of myself for quite some time, always focusing on either work or family instead. Since my daughter was gone I just decided that I needed to do better with my eating and I needed to find an exercise plan that I would stick with. I chose Pilates for a few reasons. First, I have a very stressful job, so I wanted something that was quiet and internally focused. Second, I wanted something that built strength and flexibility. Lastly, I have a mild cardiac condition, so I needed an exercise program that is challenging without being too taxing for my heart rate. Pilates seemed too meet all my requirements.


What did you expect Pilates to be like? What was it actually like?

I really did not know what to expect when I came for my first class. I was happy that my first few classes were privates, so that I could learn at my own pace without others watching. Carissa was very clear with her explanations, which allowed me to pick up the jest of if quickly. In short time I began attending the group classes at first twice a week and then increased to three times a week. While I noticed changes in my body when doing two a week adding that third really accelerated both the muscle tone and weight loss. Muscle burns more calories than fat.


What would you tell someone thinking about doing Pilates at TPU?

What I appreciate about TPU is the small class environment. I am an introvert that must pretend to be an extrovert all day at my job. I love that when I come to class it is with a small group of students that I have grown comfortable with over time. We both learn from each other, watching form and technique, and challenge each other. This does not happen due to competition, but when you see someone pushing themselves you need to push yourself a bit more too.


-Anything else you want to share? 

A few months into my practice my husband was noticing not only that I was getting strong, but that I was enjoying my workouts and really staying committed to going. I told him that I thought it would be great for him too. He has back issues, so having Carissa’s watchful eye ensuring correct positioning and modifications was just what he needed. He is now a regular too.
